Who Is My Electricity Supplier?
If you’ve taken over new business premises, moved into a commercial property, or simply lost track of who your electricity supplier is, you’re not alone. It happens constantly — particularly for businesses managing multiple sites, landlords, and facilities managers overseeing buildings they didn’t originally set up.
Use the form on this page to find out who currently supplies electricity to any UK commercial or business address. Enter your postcode, select your property, confirm you’re the occupier or authorised agent, and we’ll email your supplier details — usually within minutes for addresses we already hold on file.
Why don’t I know who my electricity supplier is?
There are several common reasons businesses end up not knowing their current supplier:
- Taking over new premises — the supply was set up by the previous tenant or landlord and no bills have come through yet
- Managing multiple sites — different properties may have ended up on different suppliers over the years
- Landlord arrangements — the supply is registered in a different name or managed by a property company
- Recently moved in — you’re on a deemed supply rate and need to know who to contact
- No recent bills — direct debits run quietly in the background and no one has checked the paperwork in years
What information will I receive?
The free lookup returns your current electricity supplier name and their contact number. This is enough to get in touch with your supplier, query your account, or confirm who you need to give notice to when switching.
The full supply information option (available at a small charge) additionally includes your Meter Point Administration Number (MPAN), meter type, profile class, and Distribution Network Operator (DNO). This level of detail is typically needed by energy brokers, facilities managers handling contract negotiations, or businesses submitting a Letter of Authority.
How does the lookup work? Understanding ECOES and MPAS
The UK electricity industry maintains a national register called the Meter Point Administration Service (MPAS), which records the current registered supplier for every electricity meter in the country. Each property has a unique Meter Point Administration Number (MPAN) that ties it to this register. The online version of the MPAS database, is known as the Electricity Central Online Enquiry Service or ECOES for short, which contains information about every domestic and commercial electricity meter in the UK. The full ECOES database can only be licensed energy suppliers – limited access is available for commercial end-users, but only for sites that they currently occupy. For business and domestic customers, the database contains two pieces of vital information. The Mpan (Meter Point Administration Number) and the current supplier.
What happens after I find my supplier?
- Contact them directly using the number we provide to get account access or query your bills
- Check whether you’re in contract or out of contract — if out, you may be on an expensive deemed rate
- Ask us to compare the market on your behalf — we work with all major business energy suppliers
Being out of contract with your current supplier is often the highest cost position you can be in. If you’re not sure of your contract end date, get in touch and we’ll check it for you — it’s free and takes a few minutes.
Frequently asked questions
How do I find out who my electricity supplier is?
Enter your postcode in the form above, select your property, and submit your details. We’ll email you your current registered electricity supplier — for most addresses this is returned within minutes.
What if I’ve just moved into a new business premises?
When you move into a new commercial property the electricity supply remains registered to the previous occupier’s supplier until you make contact. You’ll typically be placed on a deemed contract rate, which is usually significantly higher than a negotiated contract. Our lookup will tell you who the supply is currently registered with so you know who to contact first.
Who is my electricity supplier if I have no bills?
The MPAS register holds the current supplier for every metered property in the UK regardless of whether bills are being issued. Use the postcode lookup above and we’ll return the registered supplier name and their contact number.
MPAS v ECOES – Are they the same thing?
MPAS stands for Meter Point Administration Service. It’s a national UK database operated by regional electricity distributors that records the registered supplier, meter details, and supply information for every electricity meter in the country. The online version is called ECOES. When you switch electricity suppliers, the new supplier updates the MPAS to reflect the change.
Can I find my electricity supplier by MPAN number?
Yes. If you know your MPAN you can use our MPAN checker tool which will validate your number and return the associated supplier. Your MPAN is a 21/22-digit number found on your electricity bill.
What is a DNO and is it the same as my electricity supplier?
No. Your DNO (Distribution Network Operator) owns and maintains the physical cables that deliver electricity to your property. Your electricity supplier is the company you have a contract with and pay your bills to. You can choose your supplier and switch freely. You cannot choose your DNO — it is determined by your location. Find out who your DNO is here.
