EON is an energy supplier that belongs to the Big Six and serves almost 4 million customers in the UK. In 2019, EON became the first supplier from the Big Six to switch all of its customers to renewable electricity. This was in line with the company’s mission to offer green, innovative solutions that provide customers with efficient low-cost solutions, while at the same time protecting the environment.
In EON’s tariffs, energy comes from:
- 5 offshore sites generating electricity from wind
- 24 onshore sites generating electricity from wind
- 3 biofuel sites.
Recognising the urgency of addressing the climate crisis, EON is stepping up and launching a series of projects designed to save the Planet. The multifaceted campaign is known as EON Action.
EON recognises that ‘sustainability is key in the fight against climate change’ and it aims to help improve sustainability of homes, businesses, and cities. EON is on a mission to tackle the global climate change crisis by helping individuals, businesses, and entire communities meet various environmental goals.

- More sustainable homes
EON offers smart and sustainable solutions such as smart meters or solar panels for homes across the UK.
- What are sustainable homes?
Many wrongly assume that making their home sustainable requires reducing the comfort of their everyday life by, for example, reducing the temperature inside. But EON Action explains that sustainability is about introducing small changes and making our consumption more efficient. Simple ways to make one’s home more sustainable include using smart technology to monitor the energy usage, as well as switching to a greener tariff and sourcing our energy from renewables.
- How does EON Action make homes more sustainable?
EON offers a wide range of sustainable products such as smart lighting, thermostats, energy efficient boilers, heat pumps, or in-home displays. Besides, those who choose EON can get 100% renewable electricity. Finally, EON’s customers can also talk to dedicated energy experts who can help them change their habits and reduce energy waste.
- More sustainable businesses
More and more businesses around the country set certain sustainability targets and lower emission goals. EON is committed to helping businesses achieve these plans.
- What is business sustainability?
As EON writes, ‘Business sustainability refers to delivering business operations in a way that reduces environmental and social impact as well as supporting the business’ economic growth. This approach prioritises long-term growth through sustainable methods, as opposed to focussing on short-term financial gains.’
If a business is sustainable it makes a profit without negatively affecting the environment. Businesses’ commitment to sustainability is very important as the UK is on the path to achieving net zero by 2050 and everyone needs to work together to make it happen.
- What benefits do businesses get from being more sustainable?
The main advantage of going greener is reducing the impact on the environment and contributing to reversing the harmful effects of climate change. There are, however, a number of other benefits that businesses get from being more sustainable. These include:
- Reducing operational costs and reducing energy bills
- Getting new customers (as more and more people prefer companies that care about the Planet)
- Better flexibility
- Promoting innovation
- Improving reputation
- Improving brand image
- Overcoming competition
- Increasing productivity
- Offering more products
- Attracting more talent
- Improving employee retention
- Reducing waste.
Sustainable companies should primarily care about their social and environmental impact more than making money. If they do that, they will soon see that their profits go up as well. Implementing sustainable solutions and changes is a practice that almost always pays off in the long haul.
- Renewable energy for businesses from EON
To help businesses become greener, EON gives them the chance to get 100% renewable electricity at no extra cost.
Energy for SMEs | Energy for large companies |
If a business spends less than £35,000 on energy, or uses less a than 100,000 kWh of electricity / 293,000 kwh of gas per year, they qualify for the EON Next tariff. | If a business uses more than 100,000 kWh of electricity / 293,000 kwh of gas per year, EON can tailor an energy contract to their needs. |
- More sustainable cities
EON believes that by changing how people approach energy, they can change cities and reduce pollution in them. For years EON has been working with local communities to make communities more sustainable and creating a cleaner future for everyone.
EON’s impact reaches beyond the UK and the supplier has worked on implementing eco-friendly developments in, for example, Sweden. Thanks to EON’s guidance, cities can reduce their environmental footprint and change the way they generate and use electricity. As well as reducing the impact on the environment, making cities greener can improve quality of life for those who live in them.
One of the major advantages of promoting sustainability in cities is also the fact that, as EON explains, ‘Business and investment opportunities are created by workforces and residents who are attracted to the urban and social sustainability and the healthier living offered by green spaces and clean air as well as the opportunity to work for businesses who value and promote a sustainable, net zero future.’
- What is a sustainable community?
A sustainable community is made up of people who respect the environment and try not to waste energy. Moreover, sustainable communities produce and use renewable energy and invest in the local economy to create jobs and boost economic growth.
No matter how big a community is, it can be sustainable. EON works with villages that generate their own energy, as well as with areas of big cities where residents and businesses benefit from sustainably produced energy, for example, with the use of heat pumps.
An example of how EON is making cities greener is Citigen, an underground energy network in London. It provides highly populated urban areas with cost-effective energy. It does so by using the UK’s largest tri-generation plant.
- EON action reducing air pollution
‘Climate change and air pollution are two of the biggest challenges facing the world today,’ said Michael Lewis, EON UK Chief Executive.
In addition to encouraging communities to be more energy efficient, EON is trying to raise awareness about the harms of air pollution. One way in which EON is contributing to reducing the levels of air pollution is encouraging people to switch to electric vehicles. EON is also making electric vehicle charging stations more accessible.
EON’s sustainability projects
EON has completed a number of sustainability projects that fall under the EON Action campaign. Here are the main ones:
- Cooling the capital: London – in this project, EON launched the installation of one of the UK’s largest zero carbon heating and cooling systems at their Citigen site. The announcement was accompanied by unveiling a 16ft ice sculpture depicting five key London landmarks.
- Change Maker stories – in this initiative, EON shared a film series with stories about how different places dealt with energy challenges, using EON’s assistance and technologies.
- Clear Skies: through this project, EON is bringing renewable, low-carbon energy to London, thus reducing harmful emissions.
The climate crisis is already affecting all of us and we have been ignoring it for too long. EON is becoming a leader in making it easier for people, businesses, and communities to away from fossil fuels and to implement positive changes.
