How do I find my Meter Point Reference Number?
A Meter Point Reference Number (MPRN) is a unique number assigned to every gas supply point in the UK. It is then used to differentiate and identify individual gas supply points. The code is made up entirely of numbers and does not contain any letters.
The format of your MPRN is very standard and should consist of between 6 and 11 digits. It is worth noting that the MPRN is for Gas Supplies only and should not be confused with an MPAN, which is uniquely for electricity. MPAN stands for Meter Point Administration Number.
Also, the MPRN is not the meter serial number.
You may also see the MPRN referred to as the M Number or Meter Point Reference, which all mean the exact same thing. If the MPRN starts with a 74 or 75 then it is likely that the gas is piped to your property by an Independent Gas Transporter (IGT). This can have an adverse effect on the price you pay for gas as some suppliers charge a premium to customers served by IGTs.
Your MPRN should be printed on your gas bills, with most suppliers printing the MPRN on the first or second page of their gas bills. This number should not be confused with your gas supplier account number or the meter serial number printed on the meter itself. Some modern gas installations have the MPRN printed clearly on the meter itself although the practice is still quite rare. If your MPRN is not printed on a recent bill, you do no have access to a bill, or have you just moved into a property then you can find your MPRN on findmysupplier.
How do I Find my Gas Supplier and Gas Transporter?
The electricity and gas you consume is sold to you by your energy supplier, carried along wires and pipes (energy networks) to provide you with power and heat in your home. Energy Network Operators manage and maintain the network infrastructure delivering energy to your home, business, and communities. In fact, they look after everything up until the meter in your home. Like others, they are regulated by Ofgem and employ around 45,000 people in the UK and Ireland.
Independent gas transporters are private companies that own and manage the last stretch of gas pipes that connect your property to the British Gas distribution network pipelines around the UK delivering gas directly to properties. The national transmission network is owned by one organisation, the National Grid. The National Grid connects five regional gas distribution networks, below this some pipes are operated by private companies known as independent gas transporters. These have been regulated since 2004 and operate very much in the same way as a National Grid Supply.
It is still possible to switch gas suppliers when using and independent gas transporter. The process for switching is still the same as any other business property, all you have to do is enter the following details:
- Postcode
- Current business gas supplier
- MPRN
- Current gas usage
- Contract end date
