    What is an MPRN number?

MPRN stands for Meter Point Reference Number. It is a unique number assigned to every gas meter point in the UK and is used to identify the specific supply point at your property. Every gas meter in the country has one, regardless of which supplier you’re with.

Your MPRN is sometimes called a gas supply number, and is different from your meter serial number. It typically has between 6 and 10 digits and stays the same even if you switch gas supplier.

Where can I find my MPRN number?

There are several places to find your MPRN number:

    • On your gas bill — it is usually printed on the first page alongside your account details, often labelled “supply number” or “MPRN”
    • On your gas meter — some meters display the MPRN on a label attached to the meter itself, though this is not always the case
    • In your online account — if you have an online account with your gas supplier, your MPRN is usually visible in the account or property details section
    • Using our form above — if you don’t have a bill to hand, enter your postcode and we’ll find your MPRN and current supplier for you

How to find your MPRN number without a bill

If you’ve just moved into a new property, taken over a business premises, or simply don’t have a bill available, you can still find your MPRN. Use the form on this page — enter your postcode and we’ll look up your gas meter point reference number from the national gas database and email it to you along with your current registered gas supplier.

This is particularly useful if you’re a landlord, facilities manager, or business taking over new premises where no previous bills are available. Knowing your MPRN is essential before you can set up a new supply account or switch to a better tariff.

Why don’t I know who my gas supplier is?

It is more common than you might think — particularly for businesses and commercial properties:

    • Taking over new premises — the gas supply was set up by the previous occupier and no paperwork was passed on
    • Managing multiple sites — different properties may have ended up with different suppliers over the years
    • Landlord arrangements — the supply is registered in a different name or managed by a property company
    • Direct debits running quietly — payments have been going out automatically and no one has checked the supplier in years
    • No bills received — bills may be going to a different address or contact

    What information will I receive?

The free lookup returns your current registered gas supplier name and their contact number and your MPRN. This is enough to contact your supplier, set up an account, or confirm who you need to give notice to when switching.

The full supply information option (available at a small charge) additionally includes your annual consumption figure, meter details, network operator, LDZ zone, and previous supplier information. This level of detail is useful for energy brokers, facilities managers, and businesses preparing to switch or negotiate a new contract.

MPRN and MPAN — what is the difference?

Your MPRN (Meter Point Reference Number) relates to your gas supply. Your MPAN (Meter Point Administration Number) relates to your electricity supply. They are separate numbers for separate fuel types and are held on different national databases.

If you need to find both your gas supplier and your electricity supplier, you will need to use both lookup tools as they query different databases.

What happens after I find my gas supplier?

    • Contact them directly using the number we provide to get account access or query your bills
    • Check whether you are in contract or out of contract — if out, you may be on an expensive deemed or out-of-contract rate
    • Ask us to compare the market on your behalf — we work with all major business gas suppliers and can often secure rates not available on comparison sites

If you have recently moved into a property with no active gas account, you will be on a deemed contract rate — typically the most expensive rate a supplier offers. Getting this resolved quickly can make a significant difference to your bills. Get in touch and we’ll help.

    Frequently asked questions

    What is an MPRN number?

An MPRN (Meter Point Reference Number) is a unique identifier for a gas meter point in the UK. It typically has between 6 and 10 digits and stays the same even when you switch gas supplier. It is used by suppliers and network operators to identify the specific supply point at your property.

How do I find my MPRN number without a bill?

Use the form at the top of this page. Enter your postcode and we will look up your MPRN from the national gas database and email it to you along with your current registered supplier. This works even if you have never received a bill at the property.

Where is the MPRN number on my gas meter?

Not all meters display the MPRN directly. If it is shown, it will be on a label attached to the meter, sometimes near the barcode. It may be labelled “supply number” rather than MPRN. If you cannot find it on the meter, use the postcode lookup above or check your most recent gas bill.

Is the MPRN number the same as the meter serial number?

No. The meter serial number identifies the physical meter device and changes if the meter is replaced. The MPRN identifies the meter point — the supply location — and stays the same regardless of which physical meter is installed or which supplier you use.

Can I find my MPRN number online?

Yes — use the form on this page. Enter your postcode, confirm you are the occupier or authorised agent, and we will email your MPRN and current gas supplier to you. For most addresses this takes only a few minutes.

What is the difference between MPRN and MPAN?

MPRN is your gas meter point reference number. MPAN is your electricity meter point administration number. They are completely separate identifiers for separate fuel types, held on different national databases. If you need both, use our electricity supplier lookup as well as this gas lookup.

How long does it take to receive my gas supplier information?

For the majority of addresses we already hold on file, results are returned within minutes. For other addresses we retrieve the information manually and email you within one working hour during business hours (Monday to Friday, 9am–5pm). Requests submitted outside these hours are processed the following business morning.
