With more and more energy suppliers entering the market, all offering different benefits, knowing where your electricity comes from is important. Some companies now offer 100% renewable energy, with others offering different amounts.
But what is a fuel mix? How does your energy supplier compare to others? This guide should help answer your questions.
What Is The Fuel Mix Disclosure?
In the UK, all electricity suppliers are required to disclose their mix of fuels that are used to generate the electricity supplied annually.
What Makes Up The Fuel Mix?
For the fuel mix, there is a ratio of different energy sources or fuels that the supplier uses to generate electricity. The fuels or energy sources are:
Coal
Gas
Nuclear
Renewables
Others
Customers can compare suppliers’ fuel mixes with other companies, as well as comparing their suppliers to the national average.
What Is The REGO Scheme?
The REGO scheme or The Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin scheme shows what proportion of electricity that supplier’s sources from renewable generation, giving transparency to consumers.
Ofgem issues one REGO certificate per megawatt hour (MWh) of eligible renewable output to generators of renewable electricity.
The certificate gives customers evidence that a given share of their energy was produced from renewable sources.
