The Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin scheme is an EU-wide initiative that offers customers a more honest understanding of how much of our energy is being sourced by our suppliers from renewable sources. REGOs are given at a rate of one per megawatt-hour of electricity and are bought each time that a supplier buys renewable electricity to sell to their customers. Altogether, they cost about 15p each and are eligible for that produced with solar, wind, tidal energy, hydroelectric power, or anything that is considered to be green.
Suppliers are expected to send these certificates to OFGEM each year to count how much of the power they sell comes from renewables, and so far, this is having a positive effect.
Renewable generators of any size can apply for the scheme through Ofgem in Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and with the average of UK fuel mix coming to 37% renewable, we definitely aren’t doing badly, with this number rising steadily over the years.
Like many, the group also purchases Certified Emission Reduction certificates (CER) for the volume of what they supply in order to create a carbon-neutral balance. Certified by the United Nations “Clean Development Mechanism”, they are used to reduce emissions in developing countries and alongside many groups of their type, are fighting to reach a net-zero.
