Created by one of the designers behind Apple’s iPhone, it’s no surprise the Nest Learning Thermostat™ is so easy on the eye. But while its beauty is striking, you might be even more impressed by its brains.
Behind the sleek black screen is a unique self-learning technology, known as Nest Sense™. This uses a clever combination of sensors, hardware and algorithms to learn how best to configure the heating system for your home.
Extra sensory powers
So how exactly does Nest work?
Nest uses not one but three temperature sensors to get really accurate measurements. A humidity sensor gauges moisture levels in your home. An ambient light sensor adjusts for sunlight levels. And near and farfield activity sensors detect movement (or lack of it). So if you’re not at home, it knows to turn down the heating.
Nest can also think ahead. Using a Wi-Fi connection, it gathers local weather data so that your heating can be adjusted accordingly. If a cold snap is looming, Nest will be prepared.
Drawing on data from these multiple sources, Nest Sense™ creates a heating schedule that’s completely tailored to your home, your lifestyle and your location. Settings reflect your heating requirements at specific times of the day on each day of the week. And, because Nest can work out when you’re not there, it’ll build in energy-saving Auto-Away™ times into the schedule.
By heating your home in a smarter way, Nest could help you save energy. And money.
You’re in control
A change to your usual routine is no problem for the Nest. You can view and manage the heating schedule on the device’s screen or by logging into your Nest account online. So if you’re going to be in when you’re usually out (or vice-versa), you can manually change the settings.
That perhaps is the real beauty of Nest. Yes, it’s very clever. But you’re the one who’s in control.
