“ENGIE Rassembleurs d’Energies” has achieved its 14th and 15th investments in Biobolsa and Simgas 2 social enterprises that develop biogas systems in Mexico and Tanzania. These solutions provide small-scale rural farmers with modular long lasting biodigesters. They produce both gas for cooking and fertilizers. These systems enable their users to eliminate and to improve crop yields thus generating additional revenues. Through wood substitution they also help fight against deforestation. The biodigesters that are produced and distributed by local communities, can be installed within a few hours.
Gérard Mestrallet, Chairman and CEO of ENGIE, declared: “ENGIE is very pleased to accompany the scaling up of Biobolsa and Simgas in remote off-grid territories. These two new projects fit perfectly in ENGIE’s commitment to promote sustainable energy access for all and decentralized renewable solutions and further diversify the scope of technologies in which ENGIE Rassembleurs d’Energies has been active so far. Moreover these investments enable us to promote biogas as a key energetic solutions and renewable energy while serving our social commitment in Africa and Latin America. Such innovative solutions matching local constraints pave the way to up-coming major changes in the field of biogas.”
Alexander Eaton, CEO of Biobolsa said:”We are thrilled to announce the partnership with ENGIE Rassembleurs d’Energies, which represents a unique and strong opportunity to support Biobolsa in the realization of its full potential and scale. With the investment, we will multiply our social and environmental impact, empowering smallholder farmers for a sustainable and fair future.”
Mirik Castro, CEO of Simgas emphasized “The full support and trust of ENGIE Rassembleurs d’Energies to SIMGAS will help address the major challenge of deforestation in Eastern Africa while providing rural off-grid populations with affordable, clean and reliable solutions.”
By spreading biodigesters across small rural farms, the ambition of Biobolsa and Simgas is to improve the standards of living of close to 1 million people and reduce CO2 emissions by over 2 million tons over the 2015-2020 period.
